Install Kept

Install on iPhone or iPad

Install Kept before you start your habits. On iPhone and iPad the Home Screen app keeps its own storage, separate from Safari, and Safari can clear data for websites you haven't used for 7 days.

  1. Open your private link from START HERE in Safari (not a private tab).
  2. Tap Share. If it isn't in the toolbar, tap ⋯ first.
  3. Choose Add to Home Screen (under View More if you don't see it), then Add.
  4. Open Kept from your Home Screen and start your habits there.

Chrome on iPhone works the same way: tap Share in the address bar, then Add to Home Screen.

If the Home Screen app shows the Kept page, paste your private link into the box at the bottom of that page and tap Open Kept.

Install on Android

  1. Open your private link from START HERE in Chrome.
  2. Tap Chrome's menu ⋮, then Install (it may say Add to Home screen or Install app), then Install again.
  3. Open Kept from its icon on your Home screen.

Install on a Windows, Mac or ChromeOS computer

  • Chrome or Edge: open your private link, then choose Install in the address bar. Kept opens in its own window and can be pinned to the taskbar or Dock.
  • Safari on a Mac: open your private link, then choose File › Add to Dock.
  • Firefox: can't install apps. Kept works fully in a normal tab; bookmark it.

Get started

Start your first habits

  1. On the first screen, choose Choose starter habits to pick from a list, or Start empty to add your own.
  2. Pick the ones you want (three or fewer is a good start; you can add more any time), and tap the pencil beside one to change its name, schedule, target or effort.
  3. Choose the button that starts with them, such as Start with 3 habits (or Start empty). Kept opens on Today with them.

Add another habit any time with Add habit on Today, and change one later in More, then Habits.

Explore the demo

The free demo is a website of its own, with no link needed: open demo.kept.jykdigital.com in any browser. It shows a sample habit tracker with eight habits, and nothing you do there touches your own records.

Buying from a computer or a phone? The demo opens the same way on both, and the Get Kept button in it leads to the listing.

Using Kept

Every day, chosen weekdays, a few times a week or a month

A habit is due every day, on the weekdays you choose, a number of times a week, or a number of times a month.

Every day and chosen weekdays are counted by days. 3 times a week is counted by weeks: any three days of the week keep it. 4 times a month is counted by months.

For example: Exercise, 3 times a week. Done on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, the week is kept. Done on Monday and Wednesday only, the week is missed, and no single day of it is.

Amounts, and weekly or monthly totals

An amount habit has a number for the day: + adds its step, and a tap on the row lets you type the exact amount. The day is done when the amount reaches the daily target; below it, the day is part done.

A weekly or monthly total adds the amounts of the whole week or month. No single day has a target, so only the week or the month is kept or missed.

For example: Drink water, 8 glasses a day: 5 glasses is part done, 8 or 10 is done. Walk, 150 min a week: 40 minutes on four days makes 160, and the week is kept on the fourth day.

Skip a day, or pause a habit

A skip takes one day, week or month out of the count: it does not break the streak and it is not in the rate. A pause does the same for a stretch of days, from a day you choose, with or without an end.

Both are yours to set, on today or on a past day. Nothing is skipped or paused for you, and a day already done stays done.

How streaks and rates are counted

A streak is the run of kept days, weeks or months up to now. A missed one ends it. A skipped or paused one, and today while it is still open, neither add to it nor end it.

A habit on chosen weekdays counts its due days: Monday to Friday kept for two weeks is a streak of 10 days. A habit to quit is counted in days without.

A rate is the kept days, weeks or months out of the ones that were counted — kept and missed. Skipped and paused ones are in neither number, and a rate is always written with its counts.

Points, levels and rewards

A done day earns 5, 10 or 20 points by the habit's effort: Light, Normal or Hard. A kept weekly or monthly target earns once more, and a streak that reaches 7, 30, 100 or 365 days earns 30, 100, 300 or 1,000.

Points are worked out from your records each time, so a correction changes them at once: untick a day and its points go. A miss by itself never takes points away.

Your level follows the points you have earned in all; it unlocks nothing. Rewards are yours to name and redeem from your available points, and fulfilling them is up to you: Kept keeps the record.

Goals, mood and the monthly note

A goal is a number to reach. Update it yourself, with dated values and an optional quick step, or count it from one habit: its done days, or the amounts recorded on it. A goal is achieved when the number reaches the target, and a target date only says how many days are left.

Mood is one tap a day on Today. The month's note is yours: what went well and what to change, written on the month page of Progress.

Print a week or a month page

More, then Print makes a week page or a month page, on A4 or US Letter, blank to tick by hand or filled with what you logged. You choose which habits appear, and whether the month page carries the wins and reflection note and a mood row.

It opens your browser's print dialog, where you can also save a PDF. Printing does not read handwriting back into the app.

Keep your records safe

Back up your records

  1. Open More, then Backup and export, and tap Save backup file. The file holds every record and setting.
  2. Keep the .kept file somewhere other than this device, such as iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive.
  3. Back up again after you make changes. Kept reminds you with one quiet line on Today when it has been a while.

You can protect a backup with a passphrase (off by default). An encrypted backup cannot be opened without it.

The same screen exports your records as CSV tables (habits, groups, goals, moods, the monthly note, rewards, redemptions, skips and pauses). CSV is for reading, not for restoring.

Anyone with the file can read your records, so keep it private. And what was never saved to a file, and is no longer on any of your devices, cannot be brought back by anyone: the seller holds no copy.

Move to a new device or to the installed app

  1. On the old device (or in Safari), back up: More, then Backup and export, then Save backup file.
  2. On the new device (or in the installed app), open Kept with your private link and choose Start empty.
  3. Open More, then Backup and export, choose Restore from a backup file and pick the file. Kept checks it and shows what it holds before anything changes.

Restoring replaces everything on that device; nothing is merged. You have seven days to say Undo last restore.

Want to keep using both devices? Pair them instead, and they stay up to date.

If something isn't right

I see the Kept page instead of my habits

This browser hasn't been unlocked yet, or its cookies were cleared. Open your private link from START HERE again, or paste it into the box at the bottom of the page. Your records are still in this browser's storage; opening the link brings them back.

Which browsers and devices work

Works in Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac, in Chrome on Android and on a computer, and in Edge and Firefox on a computer. The current and the previous major version of each is tested.

Whether Kept opens is decided by what the browser can do, never by its name: a browser that has what the app needs runs it without a warning, even if it is not on the list (Chrome on an iPhone, for example). A browser that lacks what the app needs gets a plain page that names the supported combinations and says your purchase is still valid.

Where installing is not available, Kept works fully in a browser tab: bookmark it, or add it to your Home Screen or Dock where the browser offers it.
